Yahoo!'s Winter Wonderland: Yahoo! Ski and Snow Now Open Comprehensive Online Resource Unveiled for Winter Sports Enthusiasts
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Nov. 6, 1998 -- To coincide with the beginning of the ski season, Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) today opened Yahoo!® Ski and Snow (http://snow.yahoo.com), a cool and comprehensive resource providing consumers with quick and easy access to targeted winter information. The new site features daily conditions reports for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding, as well as resort information for destinations worldwide, reviews and descriptions of the latest snow sports equipment, chats and online club areas, and travel information. "Yahoo! Ski and Snow provides winter sports enthusiasts with timely, in-depth information on what they need to know, where to go and what gear to get for the season," said Twain Mein, outdoors producer, Yahoo! Inc. "We developed this new resource with some of the most trusted brands in the snow sports industry, such as AMI News, SkiNet, and Snowboarding Online. This site is a useful resource for our users and was designed to help make their experience as authentic online as it will be on the slopes." Let it Snow Yahoo! Ski and Snow provides snow conditions listings for ski spots worldwide in conjunction with AMI News, an independent news bureau that has served the ski industry for more than 33 years and covers daily conditions and events from nearly every ski area in the United States. From Banff, Canada to Vail, Colorado, users can find information including snowfall amounts within the last 24 hours, snow base depth and conditions, the number of open lifts and runs, hours of operation, and even special notices such as ski ticket promotions. To serve the growing population of cross-country and snowboarding enthusiasts, Yahoo! Ski and Snow also offers cross-country ski reports with information on skiable trails and facilities, and snowboard reports with details on park features, pipe type and jump information. Where to Go From black diamond runs to five-star restaurants to backcountry trails, Yahoo! Ski and Snow's resort pages offer mountains of information. Working with SkiNet, a comprehensive online skiing resource with extensive coverage of ski resorts, ski gear, instruction, and featuring editorial from SKI and SKIING Magazine, Yahoo! Ski and Snow provides visitors with descriptions of nearly 800 resorts worldwide. Each resort page provides facilities and services, local weather, mountain characteristics, directions, hours of operation and contact information to help visitors plan their stay. For example, those planning a visit to Alpine Meadows can discover that this resort was the first in the Far West to offer a six-passenger, high-speed chair lift and now has 16 coffee shops, two breweries and 10 bars within 10 miles of the resort; or learn that Killington, Vermont, is one of the largest resorts on the East coast, with 77 miles of skiable terrain and 170 snowboard trails. In addition, users can easily access additional information including local lodging, dining, car rentals, driving directions and maps through Yahoo! Get Local, integrated into each resort page. To find out where the snow is falling, users can browse reports by region and state or search for the resort that they want. Listings can be sorted alphabetically or by snowfall amount. In addition, each U.S. region is accompanied by a monthly feature article by SkiNet's travel editors. Gear to Get for the Season If you are looking for new equipment, Yahoo! Ski and Snow's gear section keeps you on the cutting edge and makes selecting winter sports equipment simple. Teaming up with SkiNet and Snowboarding Online, the snowboarding super site with live event coverage, gear, photos, interviews, and editorial features from TransWorld Snowboarding and Snowboard Life Magazines, Yahoo! Ski and Snow provides snow sports enthusiasts with quick and convenient access to reviews from extensive on-slope testing, pictures and prices of more than 80 skis, 300 snowboards, boots, and bindings from top brand names including Rossignol, Salomon, Elan, Evol and Burton. Skis are categorized by genre, while snowboards are listed alphabetically by model name.
